Democrats Fought Against A Toss-Up District

In 2021, the NC General Assembly drew legislative maps which complied with all of the Court and Constitutional requirements, through a transparent process. The problem for Democratic powerbrokers is that these maps did not help Democratic candidates enough. Democrats do not call it gerrymandering when the outcome benefits their party.

After an unprecedented Court-ordered redraw, completed by third parties, Mecklenburg County had only one competitive senate district. Unfortunately, Democrats didn’t want competitive maps – to them a “fair map” is one that provides an advantage to them. One district with a mix of 30% Democrats, 30% Republican, and 40% Unaffiliated, was unacceptable so Democrats appealed the Court-drawn maps.

Democrats are now facing their worst fears – having to campaign in 2022 on Democratic policies and voting records with the hopes of convincing voters to choose their candidates.

NC Senate District 42 – referred to as Mecklenburg’s Southern Loop District – is anchored by Providence Road and I-485 and stretches from Mecklenburg County’s southern (SC and Union Co.) borders to Southpark. The map below shows the district boundaries.

Scott Stone has lived in this district for more than 20 years. He is the president and founder of a regional civil engineering firm, which is headquartered in the district. His daughters attended CMS K-12 schools (Ardrey Kell, JM Robinson, and Polo Ridge) all within District 42.
